Anna Gát's Ideas of Power: NYC Festival on authoritarian charm, educating the elite, religious authority - October 6
John Ganz, Jennifer Frey, Musa al-Gharbi, Julia Sonnevend, Shadi Hamid, Scott Barry Kaufman, and more joining us for this important conversation.
Dear friends,
If you're in or around New York City on the day, I hope you can join me on October 6! We will spend the afternoon and evening immersed in some of the most exciting questions of this election year: the role of fame, the role of education, and the role of religiousness in shaping how real power works today.
We will have three panels for you and a roundtable, and will ensure that all of you get a chance to participate in the discussion.
TICKETS 🎟️
The event will take place on the Upper East Side.
Doors will open at 3:30 pm and close at 8:30 pm. And in that time…
With Julia Sonnevend, John Ganz and Tara Isabella Burton we will discuss the role of fame and charisma in populism. Are we all to blame for some of the overreaches by egging our leaders on on social media?
With Musa al-Gharbi, Skye Cleary and Scott Barry Kaufman we'll talk about the role of universities in both countering abuses of power by fostering open inquiry but also raising the next generation of the powerful.
With Jennifer Frey, Shadi Hamid, and myself we'll talk about how religious life can be both a counterpoint to worldly power, but also a dangerous tool in the hands of a political elite should it be captured.
At the end, a roundtable with all panelists and attendees!
This event is fully free for members. | Public tickets are also available. | All tickets are limited.
JUST DROPPED 🔥 The next episode of my new podcast The Hope Axis!
With Musa al-Gharbi himself:
Musa al-Gharbi, sociologist, journalism professor, author of the new book 'We Have Never Been Woke: The Cultural Contradictions of a New Elite' (Princeton University Press), and today's popular explorer of Pierre Bourdieu's ideas around symbolic elites and symbolic capitalism talked to me about being an outsider in academia, how symbolic elites buy their legitimacy, and why intellectuals living in fear of cancellation is such bad news for everyone.
Hope to see you on October 6!
Warmly,
Anna Gát
